Ride a tough slog for good cause

RIDING 1000km a day on a motorcycle is no small feat, but keeping it up for 14 days straight would be anyone’s idea of a tough slog.

But for Christian Outreach Church Pastor Ken Wootton, all it took to motivate him was thinking about how many people suffering multiple sclerosis were in a lot more discomfort and they did it every single day.

Pastor Wootton, along with a handful of parishioners, was set to depart from Toowoomba next week on the 14,000km ride around Australia, which they lovingly named “One Quick Lap”.

He said the aim of the game was raising funds and awareness for MS research, a cause pretty close to the church’s heart.

He said there were three members of the congregation with MS and one of them was the wife of fellow One Quick Lap rider Ranald Cameron.

It wasn’t the first ridiculous physical challenge the group had put themselves through for a good cause after a huge trip two years ago that involved riding north to Cape York, kitesurfing across the strait and then completing the Kokoda Track trek.

“We call it Beyond Us Adventures and we try to do something every year or two,” Pastor Wootton said.

He said despite the team completing plenty of training rides, the hardest part would definitely be the psychological aspect.
