MORE than 100 cyclists will leave Toowoomba this morning to embark on a 220km journey to Mooloolaba.

The TOOMOO ride, Toowoomba to Mooloolaba, will raise funds for STEPS Pathways College which will open on the Sunshine Coast later this year.

Toowoomba riders Brenton Thompson and Steve Randall are among the group who spent the past few months training hard for the ride which will arrive at Mooloolaba about 4.30pm after having left about 6am.

“We take a fairly scenic route to Mooloolaba, so up through Hampton, down through Esk,” Mr Thompson said.

“It is an opportunity to get out and ride a bike, there’s a social element, but as well as that supporting charity down on the coast. It’s called STEPS and they take and assist young adults with disabilities to become independent in their living.”

STEPS Pathways College is an Australian-first paving the way to independent living for young adults with a disability.

Mr Thompson, who works for Weis Frozen Foods, and Mr Randall, who runs a commercial cut flower farm at Cabarlah, have been riding for four and five years respectively and have clocked up many long rides.

“It’s about empowering young people to be independent and cycling. When you do these epic events it is also very empowering,” Mr Randall said.

“We have done half a dozen or more very large rides and I see people when they finish and it is almost like they have conquered Everest.”
