Coldest April day in 18 years

TOOWOOMBA shivered through the coldest April morning since 1999 yesterday.

According to the Bureau of Meteorology on April 29, 1999 it reached 3.1 degrees and yesterday the temperature dropped to 4.2 degrees at 5am, which is the coldest recorded temperature in 18 years.

Brisbane West Wellcamp Airport recorded a low of 2.5 degrees at 5am, with an apparent temperature of zero degrees.

Forecaster Brian James said although Thursday felt colder, that was due to 35kmh winds.

“It may have felt colder but Friday’s official temperature is lower,” he said.

“The cold turn can be attributed to a combination of a high pressure system coming from the south and a frontal system in the Coral Sea. Between the two, they are producing a deep, dry and cold southerly airflow.”

The weekend is expected to be chilly as well with lows of nine degrees predicted today and tomorrow.

The maximum temperature is set to be 21 degrees today with a lower apparent temperature expected.

The high pressure system will move into the Tasman Sea early next week and build up moisture which could bring showers by Tuesday.
