Give yourself a scare this weekend

-

INEVER thought I would read about a horror movie that also covers inter-racial relationships, but director Jordan Peele has done just that in his latest offering, Get Out, which will be released on Thursday.

Check out a Q and A with one of the stars, Allison Williams (of Girls fame) in screen life, in this Weekend.

The promos for the movie look terrifying, quite frankly. As a teenager I loved the horror genre. I fed myself a solid diet of ’90s classics like Scream and the Freddy Krueger movies. When I was a little too young, but over at a neighbour’s house, I also watched Child’s Play and that resulted in me battling night terrors for about three months after viewing the movie.

Child’s Play (and its sequels) is about a murderous possessed doll called Chucky.

I actually convinced myself, one night, that my dolls’ heads were turning around. But as I got older, I loved being scared.

News that Silence of the Lambs filmmaker Jonathan Demme died, aged 73, had many commentators reminiscing about the villainous character from the movie, Hannibal Lecter. Some would argue the character is one of the most terrifying created. For me, Chucky still wins hands down, but Hannibal comes a close second.

If you are at a loose end this weekend and, after perusing this edition of the magazine of course, why not revisit a few horror classics?

Also in this Weekend, we meet a 30-year-old woman on a mission to make sure her experience of infertility is not shared by others.

American artist Mab Graves speaks about her years of pain caused by her endometriosis. She urges other women who suffer crippling period pain to get help.

And Weekend also chats to a mum who started sharing her journey to good health on social media, and has become an Instagram star in the process.

Hippie Lane creator Taline Gabrielian shares a couple of recipes from her new cookbook.
