Star athletes take out awards

THE winners of the first Sports Darling Downs awards of the year have been recognised.

Sports Darling Downs held its first quarterly breakfast of the year at the City Golf Club yesterday and presented a host of awards.

Australian rugby sevens player Shenae Ciesiolka took out the Senior Sport Star of the Month award for January.

Ciesiolka helped the Australian women’s sevens team win the Hottest Sevens tournament in Darwin before being part of the national squad that competed at the IRB World Series round in Japan.

Young athletics stars were also recognised in the Senior Sport Star of the Month category.

Conor McLoughlin took out the award for February after winning a gold medal in the under 20 men’s discus at the Australian Athletics Championsh­ips.

Nicole Maynard is the senior sport star for March after making the final of the open women’s long jump at the Australian Athletics Championsh­ips before withdrawin­g due to injury.

That came on top of making the semi-finals of the open women’s 400m hurdles.

The next generation was also recognised as volleyball­er Sophie Thornton, softballer Monique Smith and athletics prodigy Mason Hughes received Junior Sport Star of the Month awards.
