ST GEORGE: Anthony Pain has won gold at a regional welding competition, which coincided with the conclusion of his four-year apprenticeship at TAFE.

He won at the Workskills Australia 2017 regional competition in south-west Queensland.

“Obviously we’re all extremely proud of his achievement,” said his employer Andrew Cross of Cross Engineering.

“Anthony winning isn’t only a reflection of us, as employers, but of his fellow workmates.

“Each person brings something different in talent and that talent can be spread a long way,” he said. Candice Cross said she and her husband hoped Anthony could build on his win by competing in the nationals in Sydney in June, next year.

“If he’s successful at nationals, he could go on to compete internationally, the last competition of which was held in Rio, Brazil,” she said.

The competition was a TAFE-organised event which allowed Mr Pain to showcase the skills he has developed. In June 2013, Mr Pain started a school-based apprenticeship at Cross Engineering in St George.
