Young guns claim first victory

Cameron Waters and Richie Stanaway (pictured) took their first Supercars wins, holding on to claim the Wilson Security Sandown 500.

Waters held off a fast-finishing Scott McLaughlin and Alex Premat, with Chaz Mostert and Steve Owen making an all-Ford podium by finishing third.

The pair’s victory broke a polesitter’s hoodoo dating back to 2013, the combo only the third in the race’s history to win the race after starting first.

McLaughlin extended his championship lead to 84 points after a disastrous day for Red Bull.

Both Jamie Whincup/Paul Dumbrell and Shane van Gisbergen/Matt Campbell endured punctures, the former recovering to sixth at the finish, while the latter’s late-race drama took them out of third place.

The race was shortened to 125 laps – or 387.5 of the 500 scheduled kilometres – after a lap-one crash for Taz Douglas that forced the race to be stopped for over an hour while the armco barriers were repaired.
