TWO Newtown residents were taken to hospital suffering smoke inhalation after a fire broke out in their West St unit yesterday.

Three Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews responded to the unit complex on West Street shortly before 3pm to see smoke billowing from a structure at the property.

A QFES spokesman said firefighters removed one person from the unit who was assessed and taken to Toowoomba Hospital.

Crews had the fire under control and were dampening down hotspots within 15 minutes of being on scene.

A Queensland Ambulance spokeswoman said two people were assessed at the scene and transported to Toowoomba Hospital in stable conditions suffering from smoke inhalation.

The unit complex and land has been listed for sale with records showing a number of duplexes and dwellings.
