A 24-YEAR-OLD man accused of king-hitting a police officer and assaulting two tow-truck drivers at the scene of a two-car accident in Harristown at the weekend is to remain in custody for now.

Police claim Trevor William Cordwell had been released from jail just four days before the alleged incident at the corner of Greenwattle and South Sts, Harristown, about 10.16pm Friday.

Police do not believed Cordwell was involved in the car crash but approached the officer from an unknown direction as the policeman was taking details of the crash.

It is alleged Cordwell punched the officer in the head before grappling with the tow-truck drivers.

He spent Friday night in custody with his matters mentioned in Toowoomba Magistrates Court on Saturday morning when they were adjourned to today so his parole status could be ascertained.

The officer’s injuries were treated at St Vincent’s Hospital.

Cordwell has not as yet been required to enter any pleas to charges of serious assault of a police officer and two counts of assault occasioning bodily harm arising from the alleged incident.

His solicitor Brad Skuse said the parole board had yet to rule on his client’s status so no application for bail would be made at this time.

Magistrate Graham Lee therefore remanded Cordwell in custody and adjourned the matters for mention back in the same on Wednesday.
