Killer quake rocks Iran and Iraq

MORE than 140 people were killed and hundreds injured by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake yesterday in Iraq near the border with Iran, about 220km northeast of the Iraqi capital, Baghdad. The quake struck at 9.18pm local time on Sunday and rescuers worked overnight to find dozens of people trapped under rubble in both countries. At least 141 people were killed in Iran, according to the country’s disaster management body. At least six people were killed in Iraq, according to officials. Electricit­y and water were cut off in several Iranian and Iraqi cities.
