■ The city was named after Queen Adelaide, wife of the British King William IV, and is the only Australian capital to be named after a woman.

■ Adelaide has been nicknamed the City of Churches – the Holy Trinity Anglican Church is the oldest, built in 1838.

■ The first municipal/local government in Australia was establishe­d in 1840 in Adelaide.

■ The geographic land area of Adelaide is 3,257.7sq km.

■ Adelaide’s population density ranks second in Australia, just after Melbourne, with 404.205 people per square kilometre.

■ Australia is divided into three time zones. Adelaide comes under Australian Central Standard Time (ACST).

■ The University of Adelaide became the first in Australia to open its doors to women in 1880.

■ In 1929, the city began operating electric trams to Glenelg Beach. The tram line is still in operation.
