POLICE will investigate whether the driver of a four-wheel drive towing a caravan which rolled on the Western Downs suffered a heart attack.

The male driver, 88, was pulled from the overturned vehicle after it rolled off the Warrego Hwy about 8km west of Miles about 4.40pm on Wednesday, with no major physical injuries.

However, the man was rushed to Miles Hospital a short time later suffering shortness of breath, a police spokesman said.

The man, from Wongaling Beach in far north Queensland, later died in hospital. His passenger, a 73-year-old woman, was not injured.

Initial Forensic Crash Unit investigations suggest the 4WD and caravan had been travelling west on the Warrego Hwy from Miles when it crossed onto the wrong side of the road.

When the driver tried to correct the vehicle, it overturned on the westbound lane which was closed to all traffic for more than five hours.

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services crews remained at the scene of the crash until 10pm.

Investigations continue.
