United must stop the big two

- — Gilbert Gardiner

Chris Goulding says Melbourne United must beat NBL powerhouses Perth Wildcats and New Zealand Breakers to be considered true playoff contenders.

United has surged back into the championship frame with six consecutive wins, but tonight faces its toughest test, the Wildcats in Perth.

The Wildcats have beaten United twice already this season, including a 32-point demolition at Hisense Arena last November.

“We’re making no mistakes about where are as a group.

“We still have a long way to go and this is a great test to see where we’re at,” Goulding (pictured) said.

United is faced with the “toughest challenge” in the NBL, outside of the playoffs, with away games in Perth and New Zealand.

The Wildcats and Breakers have shared the past seven NBL titles

“For the past 10 years getting wins over those two groups is tough to do. It remains the same this year. It probably remains the same next year,” Goulding said.

Despite the possibility of being without Dave Andersen (plantar fasciitis) for a third consecutive game, United has the firepower to go with the Wildcats.
