Guide to protect your property from fire

-

AN UPDATED, free bushfire preparation plan has been released by Australian Pump Industries. The new booklet takes farmers and home owners logically through the prep needed to defend properties.

“Anyone who lives near bushland, coastal scrub, on grasslands or between paddocks is potentially at risk,” Aussie Pump spokesman Brad Farrugia said. “The Aussie Fire Smart Survival Guide is our way of giving support to everyone who is potentially at risk.

“We don’t just supply great fire pumps, we want to help people to get the best protection.

The Aussie guide deals with the options of stay and defend or get out of the way of the oncoming fire. That decision is to a large extent based on assessing the risks for each situation and putting in the preparation work in advance.

Even if you plan to leave, a well-prepared home is more likely to survive and will be easier to defend. The guide shows how to prepare your home so you have substantially better protection if you are prevented from retreating.

“The Aussie Fire Smart Guide is indispensable for anybody wanting to protect their property, stock, crops or home infrastructure,” Mr Farrugia said.

“Without wishing to sound dramatic, it can save lives.”

The guide covers how to set up sprinkler systems to provide household protection and details all the basics of family fire drills, pump maintenance and selection.

“Consumers have favoured the Aussie Fire Chief and its big brother, the Mr T twin impeller, over the past 20 years,” Mr Farrugia said. “These pumps were designed for this very purpose. They deliver plenty of water at pressure to feed a roof-mounted sprinkler system and can supply a fire hose as well.”

The guide highlights the key questions to ask when selecting a fire pump. For example, the pump may need to draw water from a pool or dam, even if the water level is low. Not all pumps offer sufficient suction lift to achieve this.

The Aussie Fire Smart Guide is essential reading for anybody living in high bushfire danger areas including urban suburbs with bushland gullies. Aussie Pump Fire Smart Guide is available free from Aussie Pump distributors throughout Australia or at www.aussie pumps.com.au.
