Paying tribute to the fallen

- EDITOR STEVE ETWELL steve.etwell@thechronicle.com.au

TODAY will be an emotional day for thousands of Toowoomba residents as they remember family and friends who gave their lives in war-time.

Anzac Day is one of those days that defines us as a community.

Here, there is no danger of the flame of remembrance flickering and dying out.

The thousands who gathered at last year’s dawn service at Mothers’ Memorial are evidence of that.

Even more uplifting is how enthusiastically younger generations have accepted the passing of the torch.

TACAPS student Campbell McIntyre, featured on page one today, exemplifies exactly the spirit that makes us all so proud.

He, like so many thousands of his generation, will keep the Anzac remembrance alive.

Today there will again be thousands, probably tens of thousands, attending services around the region.

While we live in hope that today’s youth will never know the horror of war, it is important that we honour those who willingly gave their lives so we might enjoy the life and freedoms we have in this still-lucky country.
