GOLD Coast formals are set to be the next star of a reality TV series.

Production company Matchbox Pictures is making a new series about the world of high school formals.

The company is taking registrations from Gold Coast high school students getting ready for their formal in the next six months, with auditions held here and in Brisbane in September.

Matchbox will then follow selected participants during the build up to the big night.

The series is scheduled to air on one of Australia’s commercial television networks.

Executive producer Kylie Washington said the high school formal industry was worth more than a billion dollars a year so it made sense to make the show.

‘‘It’s just a really interesting industry that’s come a long way over the years, from borrowing a suit from your neighbour,’’ Ms Washington said.

‘‘It’s got all that celebrity about it now.’’

Ms Washington said they were looking forward to showing the differences between Gold Coast for- mals and places Melbourne.

‘‘We’d love to show the differences around the country,’’ Ms Washington said.

She said boys were needed well as the girls.
