Lions’ pride in hands of young guns as three re-sign

-

TIPPED as the next Brisbane captain, Jed Adcock says the honour might pass him by despite resigning with the AFL club yesterday for another three seasons.

The Lions also confirmed young guns Josh Green and Claye Beams had re-signed for another two years.

Adcock said he would understand if the club opted for youth when l o o k i n g f o r s k i p p e r Jonathan Brown’s replacement.

Vice-captain Adcock, 26, has been one of the club’s most respected and consistent players during a lean period.

However, Adcock, who has played 139 games since his 2004 debut, believed the likes of Daniel Rich, Tom Rockliff, Matthew Leuenberger and Jack Redden might be a more attractive longterm captaincy option when Brown retires.

‘‘Brownie hopefully has a few years left, so by that stage it might be past my time,’’ he said.

‘‘It would be a huge privilege but one of the young guys who have shown they are great leaders at the moment could get the call – that’s the way it goes.’’

In Adcock’s debut year, the Lions made their fourth straight grand final. Since then, they have played two finals games.

But he believes their last-round upset over second-placed Adelaide shows they are moving in the right direction.

Brisbane (13th; 8-12) can’t make the finals but they have doubled their 2011 win tally (four) with two games left, starting with Saturday’s away clash against lowly Port Adelaide.

Adcock believes 10 wins will be a pass mark for the side.

‘‘Ten wins for us will be a really good year (but) it falls short of where we want to be,’’ he said.

‘‘The club needs to get back and play finals footy.

‘‘It’s frustrating because we know our potential is really good but we’ve had lapses where sides have piled on big scores.’’

Josh Drummond and Ash McGrath are the only players on the Lions’ free-agent list who are yet to re-sign.
