Franklin is all clear on ‘major issues’

- MARK ROBINSON in Melbourne

LANCE Franklin has come through a battery of tests with Hawthorn still unclear of what caused his weekend health scare.

The Hawks yesterday refused to discuss details of Franklin’s medical situation, but the Gold Coast Bulletin has learnt they are yet to determine why he had an episode on Saturday.

‘‘He’s had a series of test that have cleared him of any of the major issues that would prevent him from playing,’’ football manager Mark Evans said. ‘‘If he continues to improve, and continues to train across the course of the week, then he plays.’’

The tests have ranged from blood tests to determine if Franklin had a virus to migraine-type assessments.

Discussions between Franklin’s management and the Hawks have included the possibility that Franklin may have suffered a type of seizure.

Franklin needed urgent treatment last Saturday afternoon after suffering nausea, headaches and dizziness which forced him to miss Sunday’s game against Gold Coast.

The Hawks superstar was so ill he could not telephone club officials, leaving housemate, Collingwood’s Sharrod Wellingham, to contact Hawks officials just hours before the Magpie was to play North Mel- bourne at Etihad Stadium. The Hawks listed Franklin as ‘‘illness – test’’ on their injury list released late yesterday.

While Franklin’s teammate Luke Hodge on Monday described Franklin as groggy, Franklin was able to complete a light indoors training session on Monday.

The Hawks and Franklin have continued to reject rumours about why Franklin has missed six weeks for footy.

He suffered a hamstring strain in Round 15 against GWS Giants and has not played since.
