SO D.J. Fraser (Your Views, GCB, 22/2/17) is feeling ashamed of his Australian heritage resulting from the treatment of asylum seekers .

As a regular correspondent supporting the left side of Australian politics, he should be aware that it was Rudd and Gillard who abandoned the Pacific solution and set up Manus and New Guinea, which has resulted in this situation.

Thank goodness our current PM did not support Mr Rudd’s application to the UN which would have been a bad reflection on our country.

It is also good to see the fellow who caused a disaster with home insulation has returned to his old occupation of yelling for his great unwashed supporters.

Nothing ever changes the Left in Government and chaos follows. R. PAGE, GOLD COAST

WITH no disrespect intended to Graeme Brewer (Your Views, GCB, 18/2/17), this debate over the ASF’s proposed integrated resort development at The Spit needs to be kept to facts not the what ifs and maybes of protest groups.

The ASF proposal requires no land resumptions of residential properties, not even the road works which are focused on roads needing upgrades.

The interruption to traffic is always expected for road improvements. It is better to suffer one year of pain and receive 20 years of comfort rather than continuing with the worsening situation.

Sea World has said nothing of losses to trade or fears of decreased tourism.

The Spit is public parkland but the ASF site is zoned for commercial use and that is in the town plan.

The mayor has suggested, and it is my belief well-liked, that the amount of usable public land would be increased by the removal of the scrub and replaced with more green park land that can be used by the public and protected.

I also am a war service brat raised in Geebung where the area was nothing more than scrub.

Today there are hectares of well-kept green land used by families, sporting clubs, runners, cyclists and the elderly.

The overall result of the proposed development would be a better and more usable Spit for the public. RON NIGHTINGALE, BIGGERA WATERS

HOW hard is it to means test parliamentary pensions, correctly label imported goods, pull unions and banks into gear, make foreign companies pay correct tax and totally ignore the Greens?

Not that hard and a good start for a party to prove they care about us and a very good start to win the next election. ROD WATSON, MAIN BEACH
