Hospital makeover set to deliver extra facilities

-

A $50 MILLION expansion is under way at the Gold Coast Private Hospital, 12 months after the Healthscope-owned facility opened its doors.

The expansion of the facility, which is close to the Gold Coast University Hospital will add 30 beds and six operating theatres.

Builder Cockram Construction has been commissioned to undertake the expansion, designed by DWP Suters, and the project is due for completion next March.

Also, work is in progress to deliver five specialist suites and a new day-surgery unit and the facilities are scheduled to be completed this month.

General manager David Harper said the hospital had been designed to facilitate the expansion, which has been fast-tracked to meet patient demand for services. He said the building work will cause minimal disruption.

“Work on stage two was planned to begin in 2019, but strong demand from doctors and patients has prompted Healthscope to bring forward construction work,” he said.

“The extensions will be constructed within the hospital’s existing footprint.

“A level will be added to the hospital’s eastern side, enabling it to remain functional during the construction phase.

“The $50 million expansion will lift capacity to 340 beds and 23 operating theatres.”

Mr Harper said 30 beds and six theatres will open on completion and other facilities will open in line with demand.

“The stage will include a four-theatre, day-surgery unit, an extra surgical ward and an expanded theatre floor.”

Mr Harper said construction is to be completed ahead of the 2018 Commonwealth Games and a further expansion of the hospital is expected to begin in 2020.

He said the extension reflects Healthscope’s vision of providing a world-class facility that lifts the standard of healthcare on the Gold Coast.

“The concept is to create a warm, welcoming facility with a primary focus on patient needs and effective clinical operations,” Mr Harper said.

Cockram Queensland state manager Chris Meade said the company looks forward to delivering a world-class facility.

Gold Coast Private Hospital ranks among Australia’s largest private healthcare venues.

It provides 284 beds and 13 theatres and will ultimately offer 400 beds and 23 theatres.

It offers maternity and paediatric services, specialcare nursery, intensive-care unit, emergency-care centre and cardiac catheterisation lab.

Imaging, pathology and pharmacy services are on site.

It replaces the former Allamanda Hospital at Southport whose building has been earmarked by Ramsay Health Care for a 160-bed mental health facility.
