YOU MIGHT WANT TO SLEEP IN TOMORROW AS TEMPS DIP TO 5-YEAR LOW

- NICHOLAS MCELROY

RUG up because tomorrow is shaping to be the coolest April day in five years, according to the Bureau of Meteorology.

Early risers are expected to be welcomed by a chilly 11C, about 7C below average.

It won’t last long, however, with the mercury expected to rebound in the afternoon with a sunny 25C.

Not that the drop in morning temperature matters much to Burleigh Heads dental assistant Ebony Lee. She said she was not fazed by the coming cooler months and would spend much of this time at the beach.

“Winter on the Gold Coast is legitimately only two weeks of the year,” Ms Lee said yesterday.

“I barely own any cold weather clothes.

“Through winter and autumn the surf is usually really nice, like the nice, clean, blue breakers we get at the beach this time of year.”

Bureau forecaster Nicholas Shera said a low-pressure trough which moved east over the Gold Coast yesterday was forecast to bring a front of cold air over the next few days.

He said a combination of clear skies, dry air and light winds could produce brisk mornings.

“The last time temperatures got this low on the Gold Coast was October 18 last year, and if it does come off and drop to 11C, it will be the coolest April day in five years,” Mr Shera said.
