Lifesavers rescue 55

-

ANZAC DAY beachgoers kept Gold Coast lifesavers busy with 55 rescues recorded on the public holiday.

According to figures from Surf Life Saving Queensland the rescues were spread out across the city.

A mass rescue was performed when six people were pulled out to sea after being sucked into a rip outside of the patrolled area at Mermaid Beach. It was followed by a further three rescues in the same area.

As a response lifesavers closed the beach for about an hour during the day.

It comes as the Queensland volunteer patrol season will wrap up on Monday.

Gold Coast beaches are also patrolled by professional lifeguards throughout the year.
