GOLD COAST BULLETIN Tuesday, December 14, 1993

THE shadow of failed tycoon Alan Bond hung over the Gold Coast university he created, even five years after it opened its doors.

In late 1993, Bond University wanted to buy its Gold Coast campus from the mortgagee to its financially troubled landlord, EIE International.

The university council told the Bulletin it was confident it could secure the money to buy its land and buildings from The Long Term Credit Bank of Japan.

However, executive chancellor professor Harry Messel refused to reveal how much was willing to be spent.

“We have got a deal in place but I am not in a position to discuss any of the business dealings,” he said.

Bond University operated separately from the companies which owned its buildings and campus.

Meanwhile, a police officer in a Brisbane court denied she kicked Aboriginal youth Daniel Yock, 18, just before he died.

Constable Suzanne Domrow told a CJC inquiry that Mr Yock had vomited rum as he lay facedown and handcuffed. Constable Domrow said her only contact with Mr Yock was helping to handcuff him after he was arrested the previous month in Musgrave Hill.

Back on the Gold Coast, the State Government began investigating the suitability of an unnamed company’s involvement to tender for the proposed Brisbane Treasury Casino.

The Bulletin’s attempt to investigate the matter was knocked back by AttorneyGeneral Dean Wells after a Freedom of Information request was denied.
