HORNETS ZIP BY DOING 555KM/H IN 60 ZONE

- AMANDA ROBBEMOND AND ANNA HARTLEY

BLINK and you would have missed them.

While Gold Coasters cruised along nearby roads at a maximum speed of 60km/h, two RAAF Super Hornets zipped at a breakneck 555km/h.

Main Beach local Angela Elia said seeing the ultra-fast planes, which flew as low as 45 metres off the ground, was a breath-taking experience.

“Everyone should see it, it’s very exciting,” she said, after watching the aircraft zip by The Spit.

“Seeing them going past is a real experience.”

The low-level flight was conducted as a navigation exercise and saw the aircraft travel over Western Queensland to coastal Northern New South Wales near Evans Head and then over the Gold Coast northbound to the Sunshine Coast.

The flight took one hour with the Super Hornets first spotted at Timbarra National Park at 2.50pm, Byron Bay at 3.10pm, the Gold Coast Spit at 3.21pm, Sunshine Coast at 3.40pm and Wivenhoe Dam at 3.50pm.

An RAAF spokesperson said the low-level navigation activity was designed to get crews experienced in air to ground training.
