Driver threatened with jail after telling mother of all lies

- LUCY SMITH

A SINGLE mother-of-seven tried to pass herself off as her mother when she was pulled over by police, telling them she had had cosmetic surgery.

Enid Renarta Margarita Baira’s lie was uncovered when her mother showed up and revealed her daughter’s identity to police.

Baira, who now lives on the Gold Coast, pleaded guilty in Townsville Magistrates Court yesterday to driving while disqualified and contravening a police direction.

Prosecutor Len Brown said that at 12.30am on December 16 police pulled over Baira’s white Commodore for a random breath test.

She told police she did not have a licence and they asked her name.

When police warned her it was an offence to provide incorrect details, she again provided the same name.

It was the fourth time since 2013 that Baira had been caught disqualified driving and she had twice been placed on probation for the offence.

The court was told Baira had been travelling to her mother’s house to pick up her sick child.

The coutr heard Baira now lived on the Gold Coast and had taken a train and bus with her seven children to make the court date in Townsville.

Baira was sentenced to three months in jail, wholly suspended for a period of 12 months. Her licence is disqualified until 2021. She was also fined $250.

Magistrate Steven Mosch said if Baira drove while disqualified again, she would spend time in jail.
