“We are looking at what their current associations are as to whether that had something to do with the attack,” Insp Blanchfield said.

“On the evidence from witnesses and from the footage itself we do believe it was a chance encounter and not anything planned. The evidence suggests they were signing up.”

The victim suffered bruising but did not want to pursue an official complaint.

“But it’s obviously something we are not happy about and we will take any action we can. We ask the community help us,” Insp Blanchfield said.

The trio didn’t join the gym, left after the brief fracas and headed to a valet carpark.
