The talented Coomera Anglican College cast had a wonderful brush with stardom when they pulled out all the stops and stepped back in time to stage the ever-popular musical have been the amazing show it was without the talented group of student musicians who made up the college orchestra.

Lead pianist Connor Raggatt said the Hairspray soundtrack was the hardest music he had ever learned to play.

“For me, the most rewarding part of being in the orchestra is hearing it come together because I’m used to playing pieces that go on their own,” he said.

The rehearsal process took place over 17 academic weeks and to pull together a production of real value, the cast and crew had to rehearse for two afternoons a week and every Sunday.

And when the last applause faded and the curtain closed, Year 11 and 12 students finished their musical journey at Coomera Anglican College.

Year 12 student Michael Miotto, who played Tracy’s love interest Link Larkin, said the role was a big commitment.

“It’s an experience I’m not going to forget and I was very sad when the curtain closed on our final show night,” he said.

Hairspray is more than a stage production.

Behind the challenging and enticing dance numbers, the marvellous costuming, the hairstyles and amazing prop and set design, Hairspray sends a message about equality.

As members of society, we choose how we interact with one another.

Hairspray demonstrated how strong, negative opinions and dislikes can force a minority out of mainstream society.

Tracy Turnblad uses her fame to preach of a world of equality, no matter a person’s size, looks or skin colour, and urges audiences to act in the same way.
