Student relaxed about rising costs

-

The Federal Government has announced increases in university fees from January as part of the changes, which will also include a lowering of the HECS debt repayment income threshold.

Under these changes, fees will increase by 1.8 per cent next year.

Mr Mullane said he was aware of the changes and admitted they would hit some hard.

However he urged his fellow students to take a longterm look at the plans.

“I understand the frustration which is going to come from this Budget for many students, including myself, but at the same time I understand why it is being implemented given how much HECS debt is not repaid,” he said.

“It is certainly going to affect some students but generally I think it could be constructive and positive.

“There are pros and cons but chipping away at the national debt is a good thing and we have to experience some short-term pain for long-term gain.”
