Crichlow makes stand against sale of car park

-

CONSTRUCTION of the Gold Coast’s new art gallery is one step closer – but controversy remains about how the project will be financed.

Council announced last week the $60 million project would be funded by the sale of the Bruce Bishop Car Park.

The Economic Development and Major Projects Committee yesterday approved updated plans for the gallery which included minor changes to the interior of the building.

Southport councillor Dawn Crichlow refused to vote to continue with the project until the funding decision had been made at the next general council meeting on Wednesday.

“I think by accepting this today it means we are going forward with the sale of the transit centre,” she said.

William Owen-Jones, who is not a member of the committee, said he believed voting for the progression of the cultural precinct did not mean the proposed funding model had been accepted.
