Open date for bridge

A HEAVILY damaged Yatala Bridge cut off by Cyclone Debbie will reopen in late August as repair works begin.

Support foundations of the Alan Wilkie Bridge on Stanmore Road were wrecked in late March, forcing Tamborine residents to drive north to Beenleigh to access the coast.

Construction works began yesterday and Acting Mayor Donna Gates said the bridge would not only be repaired but strengthened.

“All we have is relief that no one was seriously inured in this event,” she said.

“It has been massive for the locals for our city, Tamborine and locals.”

More than 7000 vehicles use the bridge daily.
