The Liberals are upping Defence spending from $32billion a year to $58 billion. We are not at war. We are not under attack and we have no defined enemy.

This profligate spending is madness when scarce funds are needed for infrastructure, schools and hospitals.

I HAD to laugh when I read the letter from ASF spokesman, Lois Chien.

Clearly he has a bit of a problem with numeracy.

Does he not understand that the 70 per cent of Gold Coast people polled by Reachtel last Friday who stated that they were opposed to ‘giving public land at the Southport Spit to the Chinese backed ASF Consortium to build 5 high rise buildings up to 50 storeys including a casino’ formed a very large majority.

The fact is that as the community’s understanding of the nature of the project increased, the more they opposed it.

In terms of aiming for a targeted outcome, this is surely a case of the pot calling the kettle black.

The Donaldson community consultation questionnaire failed to mention that there was a casino involved, nor did they mention that the ASF Consortium hoping to develop the project was backed by a Chinese-Government owned entity.

So let’s have no more talk of minority activist groups misleading the Gold Coast community, shall we.

SOME people never learn.

With countries who spend a third of what we do on education get far better results why do people think that spending more money will get a better result?

Maybe a better standard teaching would suffice.

We are told time and time again a lot of teachers lack the basic skills.

Well, it’s time we did something about that, it’s our children who are paying price and the taxpayers who pay for this incompetence.

of I HAVE recently returned from overseas and before I left I was a keen student of local politics.

I had to leave because of the dirty trick that was played on Larry Anthony.

The Labor party invented a group called the Liberals for forests. At the time they received 2000 votes and preferences naturally to the Labor party got Justine Elliot over the line, sadly for Larry, who I consider among the best members ever in this area.

Justine should divulge her secret as her photos are the same as they were 12 years ago.

She has also spent millions of dollars on her weekly advertising even though I am told we have a huge homeless problem in Tweed Heads.

Maybe she could forego some of her ego and do something for these unfortunate people.
