Titans are laughing all the way to bank

Finally regaining his confidence after a season out with a knee injury and a slow start to the year, Elgey is looking forward to the contest and says he and Taylor are ready.

“He’s a great player,’’ Elgey said of Cherry-Evans. “All that stuff that happened (with his contract backout), I guess it was meant to be.

“He’s happy there with his family, so you can’t really take that off him.”

Ironically, Cherry-Evans’ move has turned out to be a boon for the Titans.

Desperate to find a half after his shock decision to renege on his Gold Coast deal, the Titans landed Taylor, who is shaping as one of the best players of his generation.

And with money in the his Titans halves kitty after DCE backed out of a four-year $4 million deal, the Titans were able to land mid-season signings Nathan Peats, Konrad Hurrell and eventually, Jarryd Hayne, and push into the finals.

Elgey though, was forced to watch from the sidelines after rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament in his knee.

And he can’t wait to get in on the action on Saturday to test himself against a man he still regards as one of the league’s benchmark halves.

“He’s definitely a quality player and especially if we can get the win, it’s going to be massive for our club and I’m excited,” Elgey said.

“Me and Ash are ready, so we’ll train hard this week and see what happens.”

Elgey is starting to find his feet again after a confidencetesting start to the season.

Close to the rookie of the year in 2015, Elgey has battled to find the same consistency and instinct in his game despite having regained fitness.

It’s starting to come, although he admits a Matt Gillett kick charge-down that handed the Broncos a comefrom-behind win in the southeast derby last month had dealt a massive blow.

“We were pretty close to winning that one, so it was hard and I think it took me two weeks to get over it,” he said. “It was tough but we have to move forward and I just want to keep playing (well) each week.”

But Elgey showed his natural game is returning when he was the man to put on an “instinct” play that led to the Titans’ winning try against competition leaders Melbourne on Saturday night.

“That was just off the cuff. I was supposed to go left and (the Storm defence) rushed up and I got a late call from (Anthony Don) to put the kick in,” he said of the chip that Don managed to tap back to Konrad Hurrell for the match winner.

“That was instinct. That was one of the biggest parts of my game.
