Residents rally to save Bruce Bishop carpark

-

also use the carpark for events like the Gold Coast 600 motor race and Schoolies.

The warnings are outlined in a letter to area councillor Gary Baildon and Surfers Paradise MP John-Paul Langbroek by long-time resident George Friend.

Before meeting to vote at 1pm today, councillors will be confronted by a rally organised outside the Evandale chambers by former councillor Eddy Sarroff.

Mayor Tom Tate, who wants to use the money from the sale at the cultural centre at Evandale, maintains the maximum amount of vehicles using the central Surfers Paradise carpark is 640 at its peak. As part of the sale, the buyer of the Surfers Paradise Transit must provide 640 car parks along with another 100 to meet future demand.

But Mr Friend said council had failed to consider the “surge capacity” created by short-term demands during major event periods, which sometimes lasted two weeks.

Retired property demographer and development consultant Alan Midwood said “the drop in commercial patronage would be devastating” if the carpark was removed.
