Cats go on spree to smash Morningside hoodoo

-

BROADBEACH smashed their Esplen Oval bogy in emphatic style with a recordbreaking win against Morningside in Brisbane.

Wins by the Cats against Morningside since they entered the QAFL in 1997 have been rare but this time around they kicked their highest score and registered their biggest winning margin in the clash in Panther territory.

Big Mitch Brewer and Southport-listed spearhead Josh Baxter both kicked five goals and former Aspley star Eddie Sansbury three as the Cats romped home by 23.8 (146) to 9.12 (66).

Broadbeach’s previous high score against Morningside was 20.16 (136) in 2011 and the 57point margin was also the previous best.

“I was surprised that we won so easily but it has been coming,” coach Brett Andrews said only a fortnight after describing his players as “unfit, lazy and slow” following a loss to Palm Beach-Currumbin.

“To be perfectly honest we had a bit of a rusty start (to the season) with a lot of new players but I’m feeling we’re just starting to put it together.

Premiers Labrador led all the way to beat Mt Gravatt by 18.13 (121) to 12.13 (85) at Dittmer Park in Brisbane.

Lively half-forward Brain and centreman Zac Billy Hicks, returning from injury, starred for the Tigers who are unbeaten after five rounds.

Palm Beach-Currumbin made it three wins for Coast clubs after downing bottom side Sandgate by 17.12 (114) to 8.5 (53) at Salk Oval.

Class forward Jarryd Douglas kicked seven in the onesided romp.

The only losing Coast team was Surfers Paradise, who fell to Wilston-Grange by 9.7 (61) to 6.10 (46) at Hickey Park.
