Twiggy’s $400m gift
MALCOLM Turnbull called it as an extraordinary moment of love, an act of generosity and of leadership.
The Prime Minister was talking about the single biggest philanthropic donation in Australian history – $400 million from the family of mining magnate Andrew “Twiggy” Forrest whose wealth is estimated at more than $5 billion.
The money will go to a range of causes including fighting cancer, investing in education, and ending slavery.
“This is an act of love. It is an act of generosity and above all, it is an act of leadership that will inspire other Australians, now and in the years to come,” Mr Turnbull said.
Mr Forrest and his wife Nicole have a long history of donating to philanthropic causes. “We encourage others to give what they can – recognising it’s a very personal choice – like I have been encouraged by the Gates and the Buffetts and others of the world,” he said.
