Daley says Hayne has ability to turn series

- DEAN RITCHIE

IT feels like a lifetime ago since Jarryd Hayne last tore apart a Queensland side in State of Origin.

But finally, after an NRL retirement, NFL career, aborted rugby sevens Olympic bid and a return to rugby league with Gold Coast, Hayne is back where he belongs.

Hayne was last night named with Josh Dugan as NSW’s centres for the Origin opener in Brisbane on May 31.

Hayne’s last game for NSW was in 2014 – also the last series the Blues won.

Blues coach Laurie Daley said Hayne possessed the magic that can change the entire momentum of a match.

“Jarryd produces something special. It might only be one or two things in a game but I guarantee you they are quality touches,” Daley said.

“And they can change game, make a difference.

“Jarryd can do a lot of stuff on the field but he has one or two momentum changes in him. He will do a great job for us.”

Hayne craves the big stage and starred for the Blues in 2014.

“He has never let NSW down before on the big stage,” Daley said.

“Jarryd really is a big-game player. He can certainly worry an opposition and I’m sure he will worry Queensland.

Hayne’s form for the Titans this season has been steady without being brilliant.

But NSW teammates spoke last night about the confidence they derive from playing alongside Hayne.

Notable decisions by the Blues for Origin I were:

DALEY naming a 20-man squad with Jack de Belin, Jordan McLean and Matt Moylan the extra players.

JOSH Jackson to start with Wade Graham off the bench.

CANTERBURY’S Brett Morris beating Daniel Tupou for the vacant wing spot.

MICHAEL Jennings being unavailable because of a thigh injury.

ANDREW Fifita to start at prop with David Klemmer coming off the bench.

CRONULLA’S Jack Bird winning the bench utility spot.
