Students in school drug overdose

SEVERAL students were rushed to hospital after being involved in an alleged drug overdose at a Sunshine Coast state school.

Coolum State High principal Chris Dench wrote to parents advising of the “serious incident allegedly involving illicit substances” on Tuesday. “In each instance, first-aid was administer­ed by staff at the scene and ambulances were immediatel­y called,” Mr Dench said. “Parents were also immediatel­y informed.”

Mr Dench said he would “consult with the police”.

A student said some girls in Years 11 and 12 were understood to have taken the drug Lyrica “to get on a high” during a break.

Lyrica is a schedule 5 drug to treat nerve pain and seizures, but is also known to have similar effects to ecstasy.
