Trading vote delayed
SHOPPERS and businesses that want extended trading have been encouraged to lobby LNP and crossbench MPs as the State Government fights to salvage the biggest shake-up to shop opening hours in decades.
Yesterday the Parliament was due to vote on legislation to standardise opening hours and allow bakeries, butchers, supermarkets and hardware stores to open earlier and later, as well as allow 24-hour trading during major events such as the Commonwealth Games.
But it was put off until next month when it became apparent the laws would fail with crossbench and LNP MPs claiming they would see the supermarket duopoly crush small business. Their opposition was slammed by the National Retailers Association as jeopardising jobs and growth.
