Driver leaves trail of destruction in Ashmore

-

A MAN who crashed into a brick wall, drove over a utility box and hit a parked car in Ashmore is lucky to have escaped with only minor injuries.

Yesterday at 3.15pm the man, believed to be in his fifties, came off Currumburra Rd, hitting a parked car before smashing into a brick wall.

It is believed he then tried to drive forward, running over a utility box before reversing back onto the road and attempting to drive away.

The man made it about 100 metres down the street before his car stopped, the left front side of the car scraped and the wheel bent.

Resident Zach Parkes, 24, was driving by and said he saw a “big puff of smoke” coming from a house on the road and stopped to see if he could help.

“I was trying to see if he was all right,” he said. “He started driving away and just stopped ... then the ambos got here.”

He said he was told the man might have a medical condition.

The man was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital in a stable condition after sustaining a sore shoulder and neck injury.

QFES Southport Station Officer Graeme Stoner said Energex were called to the scene as live wires were coming out of the utility box he had hit.
