Shinn heads to US

Ward during a working holiday in the US in 2008 and the trainer has remained friendly with the jockey.

But it was still a surprise to Shinn when Ward first contacted him in February to ask if he was interested in riding for him in America.

“This is a quiet period for Sydney racing, so it is the perfect time to go over to America,’’ Shinn said.

“I’ll be back in Sydney in mid-July to get ready for the spring carnival.’’

Shinn has ridden overseas in New Zealand, Japan, Hong Kong and England but America represents a new challenge.

A former premier Sydney jockey in 2007-08, Shinn has ridden nearly 1500 winners during his celebrated riding career, including the 2008 2018 COMMONWEALTH GAMES HOST CITY Melbourne Cup on Viewed and the 2016 Golden Slipper and Magic Millions 2YO Classic on Capitalist.

Shinn said Racing NSW chief executive Peter V’landys and Peter McGauran, a former federal minister in the John Howard government, were instrumental in ensuring he secured an American working visa and jockey’s licence.

“I’m indebted to Mr V’landys and Mr McGauran for helping me with all the necessary paperwork,’’ he said.

“I am very grateful to be afforded this opportunity and I want to go to the United States and do Australian racing proud.’’

After Shinn’s application for a US riding licence was approved over the weekend, Ward sent Shinn an audio message yesterday in which he said: “Can’t wait for you to get here buddy, can’t wait. We are all excited over here, everybody in America.’’

Shinn’s US summer stint is a rarity for Australian jockeys, who usually travel to Asia or Europe to ride on the international stage.

In fact, Shinn’s five-week American contract is believed to be the first for an Australian jockey in decades.

Ward has been a trailblazer for American racing, becoming the first to train a winner at England’s famous Royal Ascot meeting when he won the juvenile double – the Windsor Castle Stakes and Queen Mary Stakes – in 2009.

He has been a regular Royal Ascot raider and won again there last year with the brilliant Lady Aurelia. 7 2.15 5.00 9.00 — *4.50 5.00 9.00 21.00 9.00 11.00 7.00 21.00 15.00 17.00 17.00 MATAGAMI nEW EnDEAvouR youRS MInE ouRS kEnny SuCCEED ASSERGI READy zAIM fIRE fREnCh CoMMAnD younG AMERICA EnSIGn fLoRAL onE I AM DynAMIC bIERboWER vICToRy vIbES RIDGES PRIDE
