Singapore eyes Origin

-

SINGAPORE has emerged as a serious player to host a State of Origin game as the NRL prepares to reopen talks this week about bringing extra Origin matches and a grand final to Suncorp Stadium.

NRL chief executive Todd Greenberg said he would meet Queensland’s Major Events Minister Kate Jones this week to discuss Brisbane matches.

Suncorp Stadium, the Sydney and Melbourne cricket grounds and Auckland’s Eden Park are at the forefront of alternative venues for as many as three grand finals while Sydney’s ANZ Stadium is being rebuilt, possibly from next year.

Pressed on which markets were lobbying to stage the second Origin match outside Australia, Greenberg said: “Singapore Sports Hub has been very consistent about their desire for elite content. They are very engaged.

“The time zones (Singapore is two hours behind AEST time) are pretty good.

“We have a lot of interest from North America, not so much Origin, as for premiership games.’’

The Singapore Sports Hub stadium has a 55,000 capacity.
