House Rules: ‘I thought I could lose my brother’

“I was thinking, ‘ I’m on a bloody reality TV show. I’ve cut my wrist. This could be serious. My girlfriend (Tess) is back at home (in Perth) on the other side of the country,” said Andrew.

“I was more worried about the people at home, thinking: if something seriously does happen I could think of things that are more important than being on a TV show.”

Taken to Pindara Private Hospital in Benowa, Andrew was rushed into surgery where it was discovered he had cut through a tendon and partially cut through a nerve. His girlfriend Tess rushed to his bedside.

“When I woke up I could move my fingers a bit, so I thought, ‘that’s good’,” said Andrew. “The doctor said I was pretty lucky.”

Andrew has been told it could take two years for feeling to return to his hand.

“My ring finger’s got feeling back. I think they’re pretty confident it will come back,” he said.
