HOW TO BE FIT AND FAB FOR MARATHON

- EMILY SELLECK

GOLD Coast fitness model Danielle Byrnes says anyone can run a marathon.

The Mermaid Beach pilates teacher has been training for the Gold Coast Airport Half Marathon, which takes place on Sunday July 2.

“I’ve always been a runner, this will be my fourth time running the half marathon,” she said.

“For newbies you should probably start training about 12 to 16 weeks out … because it’s not about how fast or slow you run, it’s whether your legs will hold out and if you can take that many steps.

“I think it’s definitely achievable for anyone if you do the right training.”

Ms Byrnes said more than 40,000 people flocked to the Gold Coast for the annual marathon.

“Of those 40,000 about 27,000 actually participate so it’s great for tourism,” she said.

“There’s nothing like the Gold Coast marathon. I used to love running with music because it motivates me but because there are so many people cheering and lining the track on the Gold Coast, it’s the best motivation.”

The Gold Coast Airport Marathon ambassador said she kept her diet “consistent” in the lead up to the race.

“Come race day you’ll need sugar and carbs ... you’re always a lot more hungry when you’re running,” she said.

“But in the weeks leading up to the race you don’t need to ‘carb-up’ like some people say, maybe unless you’re running the full marathon.”
