Hero: ‘I was throwing bottles at them, pint glasses, stools’

- ANTHONY KEANE

A SOCCER fan who hurled bar stools at knife-wielding terrorists, along with a cabbie who tried to run them down, are among the heroes emerging from the blood and chaos of the London attacks.

A distraught Gerard Vowls, 47, said he left a pub after watching the Championship League final to witness three men stab a girl 10 to 15 times as she pleaded for help.

“They started running up the road. I was screaming ‘Run, everyone run, they’re terrorists, they’re stabbing everyone!’ Mr Vowls said.

“They ran up to the Tavern, they stabbed the bouncer ... they were stabbing everyone. I was throwing bottles at them, pint glasses, stools.

“I tried to help as many people as I could but at the end of the day I was defenceless, mate.

“If I’d have fell over they probably would have killed me.”

He said he even tried to prise a seat off a nearby bicycle to throw at the men.

“I want to know if this girl is still alive,” he said. “I’ve been walking around for an hour and a half crying my eyes out. I don’t know what to do.”

Mr Vowls said he acted on instinct — and out of desperation.

“They kept coming to try to stab me … they were stabbing everyone. Evil, evil people.”

Others joined in pelting the men with bottles. Meanwhile a taxi driver named only as Chris said he did a U-turn to try to run one of the men down.

“I turned around and tried, but he sidestepped me,” he said.

“I spun the cab round, I was about to ram one of them, but he sidestepped and three police officers came running towards them with their batons drawn.”
