A NEW open-wheel racing series would be a shot in the arm for the Gold Coast 600.

The Super5000 cars combine a Formula 1-style chasis with a V8 engine.

The Supercars organisation has done a mighty job holding up one of the city’s top events since the US IndyCars exited but the GC600 has open-wheelers in its DNA.

This new category would appeal to motor-racing stalwarts who yearn for the glory days of the Gold Coast Indy festival.
