CONNECTIONS WORK WONDERS

-

SOUTHERN Cross University business students are proving industry connections can make the difference when pursuing a career after university.

Two accounting students based at the Gold Coast campus have gained paid roles with the Tweed Heads firm Oculus Financial through networking and internships.

International graduate Devendra Motaparti, who studied for a Master of Professional Accounting, and final-year student Kate Groucutt, who will complete her Bachelor of Business, have landed their first jobs in the industry with Oculus.

Oculus practice manager Tim O’Hara said the collaboration with SCU was proving valuable for the company and students.

“Kate has started working three days a week, which will increase over time, and Devendra is now working full time,” Mr O’Hara said.

Devendra, 32, studied for a Bachelor of Computer Sciences in India and moved to Australia 11 years ago before completing his masters degree.

“When Oculus advertised for a trainee accountant, one of the careers consultants at university referred me to this position and helped me to apply,” he said.

Kate, 21, applied at Oculus for an internship, which turned into a paid position before she had her first full day on the job.

“Oculus said they didn’t just want me as an intern but rather as an employee, so I started working as a trainee accountant,” she said.

“I never expected to secure employment before graduating, so I am so grateful. I went into accounting because I want to be employable for the long term and do something I enjoy.

“Not only did I get to study in this beautiful location, now I get to work here and intend to become a fulltime junior accountant once I graduate.”
