Sally beats key Games contender in Boston

-

GOLD Coast hurdles star Sally Pearson chased home three Americans in the latest race on her overseas tour but finished ahead of a Commonwealth Games rival.

Pearson said she was not happy with her 100m hurdles finish, placing fourth in 12.79sec behind winner Jasmin Stowers (12.61), Christina Manning (12.69) and Sharika Nelvis (12.71) on the second day of the track and field event in Boston in the US yesterday.

Her time in the final was five hundredths of a second slower than she ran in her heat earlier in the day.

“Times are coming down 4th in heat 12.74 and 4th in final 12.79. Little disappointed with the result. Always a competitor,” Pearson tweeted.

The previous weekend, Pearson had clocked a winning time of 12.81 at a Manchester meet in England.

From the point of view of winning at the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in April, there was encouragement to be taken from Pearson’s race yesterday because she finished in front of likely England representative Tiffany Porter (12.87).

The 2012 Olympic champion now heads to Jamaica for one more meet before returning home to continue her preparations for the world titles in London in August.

Fellow Australian Fabrice Lapierre produced his first two legal jumps beyond the eightmetre mark this year to finish second in the men’s long jump in Boston.

Lapierre registered jumps of 8.03m in the first and third rounds to finish a narrow second behind American Jarrion Lawson (8.06m) at the street meet.
