Wallabies want Simmons even if the Reds don’t

-

ROB Simmons is more highly valued by the Wallabies than his home state and the dumped Reds stalwart has vowed to fight on with a switch of clubs.

Whether that is in Australia next year or with a top club in Europe is unknown.

The Australian Rugby Union has agreed to a new contract top-up to keep the 71-Test lock in Australia until the 2019 Rugby World Cup in Japan.

That deal was stitched up two months ago which part explains why Simmons must be agog that he is unwanted for 2018 by the state he has devoted nine seasons to.

To activate it, Simmons must find a new Super Rugby home in Australia.

Simmons’ emotions were still too raw yesterday for any interview but he did provide this perspective.

“I have loved my time with the Reds and have experienced the highs and the lows with them and it has moulded me into the man I am today,” Simmons said.

“While the decision is disappointing, I’m excited about my future outside of Queensland. I wish the Reds the best.

“I have an offer from the ARU for the next two years and I am exploring my options in Australia as I still have a burning desire to contribute to Australian rugby and the Wallabies.

“Should this not come to fruition I will look to play overseas but will always put my hand up to be available for the Wallabies.”

Simmons, 28, would be snapped up in a normal Super Rugby market but the climate is anything but that.
