He said many cultural events around the Games would finish late at night and extended trading hours could be integral to ensuring crowds aren’t all trying to leave the same suburbs at the same times.

“We need to look at, when these events are over, how are we going to get everyone home and does it make sense as part of the operationa­l solutions to have some extended hours so that people stay out a little while and spread out the burden on the transport network,” Mr Roberston said.

Shuttle buses will be placed strategica­lly around the region on the advice of the federation, as a contingenc­y in case accidents or other factors affect the first layer of transport.

The federation’s review found there had been 3500 applicatio­ns for internatio­nal media to come to the Games
