Accused’s mum ‘unable to go home’

-

The Murwillumbah local said she picked up clothes from her home on Wednesday but had been instructed by police not to return unless escorted by officers.

“When I arrived home (at about 12.40pm on Tuesday) they were standing out the front of the house with bats and bottles and I was threatened myself,” she said.

“I’m staying away from home because I’ve had death threats … I’ve had to have police escort me.

“When I left the police station (on Wednesday) … one of the young guys who threatened me … walked out of the police station and threatened me again.”

Police yesterday appealed to members of the public who witnessed or captured the melee on video to come forward. They also set up a command post in the centre of Knox Park to speak to locals.

Detective Inspector Brendon Cullen said the sheer number of potential witnesses to the event posed a “challenge” for investigating officers.

Ms Eitz this week defended her son, claiming Alderton acted in self defence after he was approached while on the way home from shopping at Coles.

Alderton was remanded in custody following his brief appearance at Tweed Local Court on Wednesday.

He is scheduled to appear in Lismore Local Court on June 27.
